Challenge to remove outdated stereotypes of old age reaches Wales

[UKPRwire, Thu May 21 2009] WRVS volunteers and staff will come together tonight, 19 May 2009, at the National Assembly for Wales to highlight the work of WRVS in Wales to Assembly Members, representatives from the NHS, other voluntary and statutory partners, companies and charities.

The reception will also give the charity the opportunity to promote the latest campaign My Life My Story, where WRVS are challenging people to dump old stereotypes about old age and to break the age barrier. WRVS are collecting a story-bank of older people’s stories to show how wrong the stereotypes are.

Mary Howard Jones who became a WRVS volunteer in the early 1950s as an ambulance driver and is currently both a volunteer at a local Darby and Joan club and an emergency services volunteer will set the scene to encourage others to take part in the campaign by sharing own stories.

And to make it even easier to join in, WRVS will bringing along an interactive kiosk for attendees to record their thoughts on growing older in Wales. Also on the night, WRVS will be inviting people to ‘make their mark’ on a specially designed wall. All contributions will be made available on the My Life My Story pages of this website shortly.

To take part in the campaign, visit wrvsmystory.org.uk to find out how people can break the age barrier by sharing your stories and memories.
