New version of an old classic whets the appetite of Welsh rugby fans – thanks to a bet!
For Welsh rugby fanatics who just can’t wait for the Triple Crown match against Ireland, there is a new PC game that allows them to begin the challenge a little earlier.
[UKPRwire, Tue Feb 26 2008]
Software company Lware Limited has produced a new version of Space Invaders which replaces the little green aliens with the green of the Emerald Isle. In this cartoon style variant of the game, the attackers take the form of shamrocks, pints of the black stuff and Irish rugby shirts with a menacing side step.
Richard Leyshon, director of Lware and a former pupil of the Graig School in Llanelli wrote the game for a bet. He explained “I was talking about software with someone from a local firm about 10 days ago and he set me a challenge claiming that my own software abilities were unproven. I have no idea where the Invaders concept came from, I think it was just a release from the more ‘serious’ applications we are normally involved with in Lware – data driven software for personal and club records for example.
Anyway, I proved the point by getting a full game completed within about five days and then, following Wales’s thrashing of Italy, I made some changes in honour of the team. We have been absolutely amazed at the number of downloads. The game has only been live for a matter of hours.”
Lware has promised that, as and when the Irish are despatched at Croke Park, a new Grand Slam version of the game will be released with a strong French flavour to it.
The game is suitable for PCs running Windows XP or Vista and is available at
