UK Businesses urged to make TPS checking their New Year resolution

Businesses have been asked to make this New Year the time to start checking numbers against the Telephone Preference Service to avoid potential legal action and fines.

[UKPRwire, Wed Jan 09 2008] Businesses have been asked to make this New Year the time to start checking numbers against the Telephone Preference Service.

The call has come from Selectabase, the providers of the 1check TPS checking service.

It may not sound the most exciting of resolutions for your business, but if you call a registered number by mistake, you could face legal action and even a £5000 fine.

The UK Telephone Preference Service is a central register of consumers who have chosen not to receive unsolicited sales and marketing phone calls, or cold calls.

And the chances of calling a registered number are pretty high. Research suggests that over 60% of UK home numbers are now registered with the TPS, and 55% of business numbers are registered with the CTPS (the b2b version of the TPS).

That’s nearly 15 million home phone numbers and 1.2 million business numbers waiting to trip up you or your staff.

If you use the phone for business, calling either consumers or other businesses, then you should check numbers against the Telephone Preference Service before every call.

So that’s your new year’s resolution sorted then. And you didn’t even have to go near a gym.
