IPTV Heats Up with a Bumper 70,000 Set-Top Box Order

UK IPTV company, Global Digital Broadcast, boost set-top box sales from 250,000 to 320,000 with USA deal.

[UKPRwire, Thu Jun 21 2007] UK IPTV specialist, Global Digital Broadcast, turns up the heat in the IP set-top box market, with an additional sale order of 70,000 units of the GDB audio visual entertainment centre (AVEC) boosting the original estimate for unit sales of 250,000 to over 300,000. GDB has been forced to seek assurances from the manufacturers that they can keep up with demand and produce one million boxes per month.

The orders came from just two USA-based IPTV companies; IVNet.tv and SuncasTV. IVNet.tv has ordered 50,000 units and will run its own iStream service and also carry the GDB channels on the box. SuncasTV, which launched its GDB-hosted IP channel on Friday 1 June 2007, placed its order for 20,000 units.

The AVEC box is programmed with GDB's own middleware and currently carries over 100 GDB channels. It allows the viewer to watch IPTV on a normal television set via a broadband connection and has the capability to support thousands of IP channels. Previously, IPTV was only able to be viewed on PCs and compatible media such as mobile telephones.

Mr. David Wray, co-founder and spokesperson for GDB, says; "The AVEC is, currently, the only fully-functional, open, IP set-top box on the market. We have been telling people this for the past year and now, once again, we have proven that Global Digital is at the forefront of IPTV!"

He continues; "The phone has been ringing off the hook with people wanting to know more about the box and asking me if these figures are true. Well, yes they are and I would like to invite the press to come and see it for themselves."

The shipment, which is the first from the UK to the USA, is scheduled for late July 2007.
