Investors in People award opens up the world to Virtual Secretary Firm

As the company’s reputation and client base grew, OutSec’s management team reviewed their internal processes and procedures relating to the handling of in-house staff and remote workers. Recognising the important role that their workforce plays in the company’s continued success, they investigated several business programmes. They chose Investors in People (IiP) because it was a business improvement framework, which provided a business toolkit with emphasis on developing the key skills and competencies of their staff.

OutSec’s Managing Director Vanessa Phillips said: “Our people are our most valuable asset and achieving the IiP Standard publicly demonstrates to our staff and clients that, in terms of future development, they are at the forefront of our company. We also wanted to show that an Internet typing company could achieve the same standard of accreditation as conventional companies. None of our competitors had the IiP Standard and we saw it as a valuable marketing asset to differentiate ourselves from others. “

OutSec worked in partnership with The Assessment Network, the Investors In People Centre for the East of England, who developed a customised business framework to improve the company’s processes, procedures and competitiveness. Over a two-month period, The Assessment Network carried out rigorous external audits of OutSec’s internal working practices, highlighting the areas where improvements could be made.

“Following the assessment we were able to put in place processes and procedures which are integral to the smooth running of the business.” commented Vanessa. “Our staff now receive the very best training and work to consistently high standards. There is now an inclusive ‘family’ feel in the company, which is vital for us to get the best from our outworkers and helps break down the isolation and detachment that many experience when working from home. OutSec achieved Investors in People accreditation in 2005 and the Directors have seen real benefits in terms of improved client perception of the company. Larger clients are particularly impressed, having undergone the process and knowing what is required to achieve IiP status. The Standard has also proved an attraction to potential clients, such as legal firms and others with a high media profile, who are sensitive to labour issues.
