A new fast-track master’s degree in Surveying (Construction Management) has been launched by the College of Estate Management (CEM).

The 40-month distance learning course is aimed at those who already have a degree and wish to develop their careers to MSc level. The qualification is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and satisfies the requirements for corporate membership (MCIOB).

The course establishes fundamental knowledge and skills required to work in construction, providing a comprehensive insight into construction practice. The course is in three parts, with the addition of a foundation for degree holders in unrelated subjects. After the foundation, the first part of the course covers the technology of building, introduction to construction law, and construction markets and finance. The second part provides students with a choice of subjects including construction law, construction economics and value management, project management, construction technology, maintenance and adaptation of buildings, contemporary quantity surveying practice and construction management.

The third part of the course covers research and the skills needed to complete a dissertation. This extended piece of research within a construction related area is the final module to be completed for the award of the MSc.

Gary Reynolds, CEM’s head of construction, said: “This new master’s degree is the ultimate qualification for a construction professional. It is the next step for those who already have a degree and wish to further enhance their qualifications and develop their careers.”

CEM is the leading provider of supported distance education for construction and real estate professionals. Nineteen courses are offered at diploma, bachelor’s or master’s level, with most also accredited by the relevant professional organisation, such as RICS and BIFM, as well as CIOB. Founded in 1919 and currently celebrating its 90th anniversary, CEM has helped more than 150,000 people, at all levels, with a wide range of business and academic backgrounds, to gain the qualifications needed to enhance their careers. The college currently has 4,000 students in more than 100 countries. Many of its alumni are now high flyers in government, property administration and private practice the world over.

Chartered members of the CIOB are among the most highly regarded professionals working throughout the international construction industry. Members are drawn from a wide range of professional disciplines working within building and construction supply chains, including clients, consultants and contractors, as well as specialists within regulation, research and education.

CIOB president, Professor Li Shirong, said: “Through CIOB accreditation, we recognise CEM’s high standard of delivery of qualifications within the built environment. CEM qualifications in construction and related disciplines are famous the world over.”
