Recently, some of the world's major botnets such as Waledac, Mariposa and Zeus were taken out. Cumulatively they were responsible for a considerable percentage of the spam sent around the globe. Shortly after the takedown, the anti-spam community could notice a considerable decrease in spam-levels.
The effect however was not long-lasted. “Already after less than four weeks after the takedowns, average spam levels for our customers rose back to the average 90% or even higher.” according to SpamExperts CTO Dreas van Donselaar. “It seems that spammers without any problems at all, were able to make new botnets available to continue sending out spam-waves from across the globe. We can only guess at how many infected machines there are worldwide connected to botnets that may still be sleeping.”.
The anti-spam branch of Google reported similar findings. Although spam-levels did decrease temporarily by 12%, levels by the end of the quarter were still 6% up compared to the same period last year, as the company mentioned in the official Google Blog.
In order to effectively reduce spam, different measures treating the root of the problem are needed. As email security expert SpamExperts (http://www.spamexperts.com) points out, the only real way of fighting spam is to educate consumers to not click on links and to not buy products advertised in spam messages. This in combination with stricter global legislation on anti-spam laws, will eventually terminate email-based spam as it will make sending of spam pointless from the spammers perspective.
