MYCARCHECK.COM UNCOVERS KEY FEAR FOR CAR BUYERS

Almost three-quarters of second-hand car buyers who check the history of their vehicles worry that they are being sold stolen or damaged goods.

[UKPRwire, Wed May 31 2006] Almost three-quarters of second-hand car buyers who check the history of their vehicles worry that they are being sold stolen or damaged goods.

According to a survey carried out by MyCarCheck.Com 73 per cent of their clients want peace of mind to ensure they are not buying something which has previously been involved in a crime or an accident.

Since 1996 insurance companies categorize vehicles that have been involved in claims as either A,B,C or D.

Category A means the car should be scrapped and crushed. Category B means the body should be destroyed, while C means the damage is extensive but repairable and D is reserved for vehicles with minor repairable damage or possibly stolen and recovered undamaged.

It is estimated that of the 35 million vehicles registered with the DVLA one in three have something to hide.

Each year an estimated 25,000 dangerous cars are put back on the road, many of them sold to unsuspecting motorists by organised gangs and confidence tricksters making an estimated £3 billion a year from the illegal trade.

”What many people don’t realise is that a car may look all right but if it has been written-off or stolen then insurance companies may not pay out if it is ever involved in another claim,” said Roger Powell, General Manager of MyCarCheck.Com,

”Insurance companies don’t check the history of a vehicle when a motorist takes out a policy, that’s up to the owner.”

MyCarCheck.com was surprised that the same survey revealed that a staggering 78 per cent of people were unaware of that fact.

”When you consider that one in seven cars on UK roads are regarded as total insurance write-offs, which equals about four million vehicles, it is easy to see how somebody can be caught out,” added Roger Powell.

Over the next 12 months around five million British motorists will spend more than £28 billion on used cars - an average of about £5,100 each.

MyCarCheck.com, the fastest growing vehicle checking company in the UK and owned by Stockport-based CDL, says the marked increase in car data checks is a sign that people are beginning to take seriously the history of the cars they want to buy.

Using data supplied by the DVLA, the police, the Association of British Insurers MyCarCheck.Com is able to provide a one-stop Vehicle Fraud Protection Service to consumers for just £9.95.

By holding information from all the relevant authorities under one roof MyCarCheck.Com is able to identify vehicles offered for sale which have been stolen, written-off or rebuilt.
