Education: STUDENTS GROUND THEIR HELICOPTER PARENTS

STUDENTS GROUND THEIR HELICOPTER PARENTS

This survey shows that students are not as heavily influenced by their parents as much newspaper coverage about helicopter parents would have us believe.

[UKPRwire, Thu Aug 28 2008] University students are embracing the independence that comes with entering higher education, despite the growing concerns about helicopter parents.

In a survey carried out by student website studentbeans.com and completed by 1427 UK students, parents emerged as one of the least influential factors in the decision making process surrounding university applications.

84% of students said their parents did not influence their decision to continue into higher education.

The decision to go to university was, for the vast majority of students, influenced by the desire to get a better job when they graduate (90%), and to have a good time (41%). Only 16% said they were influenced to apply to university because of their parents.

To prove the point further, only 2% of students said that their choice of course was influenced by their parents.

And only 22% said their parents influenced which university they chose to attend.

However, students are yet to completely shun their parents desire to be involved, as 47% said that their parents helped them with their university applications.

James Eder, director and co-founder of studentbeans.com says: “University is the first foray into independence for most students and they are embracing the decision-making responsibilities this brings.
“Whilst most students have encouraging parents behind them, they still need to be given the credit they deserve for making these tough decisions for themselves.”
