[UKPRwire, Sat Oct 24 2009] Fashion house Emmanuel Ungaro took a big risk when they took on Lindsay Lohan as artistic director – one that ultimately didn’t pay off. Anyone who follows fashion, or who simply glances at the tabloids, will have no doubt heard about the criticism the It-girl received for her fashion debut.

Emmanuel Ungaro took on Lindsay in the hope of boosting sales, which have been dropping for years. The team behind the idea knew it would be a big risk, but felt the extra attention that Lindsay Lohan’s involvement would bring could only be a good thing.

Mounir Moufarrige is the chief executive officer of Ungaro. “Odds are it could work,” Moufarrige told WWD. “Everything we’re going to get is going to be a plus. I think the noise level around Lindsay will be very, very big.” And that’s exactly what it has been.

The fashion house were looking for someone to bring a more modern collection to the brand, and Lindsay’s work has achieved this. Criticism has come from numerous designers and fashion followers, deeming the collection to be too young. The collection itself featured models in thigh-skimming dresses, bright colours, harem trousers and an abundance of heart motifs.

This was the collection’s downfall according to Susannah Frankel, fashion writer for The Independent newspaper. “It was entertaining, certainly,” Frankel reports. “But quite what any of it had to do with a name that once stood proudly for bourgeois elegance and, even more so, Parisian sophistication is less clear.”

Whilst many consider Lohan’s role as artistic director at Ungaro to be little more than a publicity stunt, she maintains that this is a career move that she would like to continue. After the show she proudly walked the runway with chief designer Estrella Archs.

“Working with Estrella and the team at Ungaro is a dream come true,” Lindsay said in an interview with UK newspaper the Daily Mail. “Fashion is one of my favourite things in the world and this is the best week of my life.”

Whether Lindsay Lohan will create a more successful fashion designing career for herself, we’ll just have to wait and see.
