Whether you want to look younger or simply spend a bit more time on yourself, here are modelling agency Models Direct’s top New Year’s beauty resolutions to follow.

1. Take it all off! It’s all too easy to get home from a tiring day and not bother taking your make-up off when it’s time for bed, but this is a habit you should try to change. Leaving your make-up on can make you more prone to break outs of spots and other skin problems.

2. Have a clearout. Plenty of us keep cosmetics longer than we should but products lose effectiveness over time as well as being a breeding ground for nasty germs! The shelf-lives of products vary so Models Direct advise that you do some research into how long each one lasts.

3. Dare to be different. The great thing about clearing out your make-up bag? You get to restock it! If you’re buying new make-up why not try something a bit different to what you’re used to? 4. Protect yourself from the elements. You may only be dreaming of sunny weather at the moment but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be thinking about protection from the sun. Many products now contain SPF so it shouldn’t be a problem wearing them every day. While it’s still cold use moisturiser to prevent dry skin.

5. Clean your make-up brushes. Make-up and cosmetics can host a build up of bacteria and as they are used on the sensitive skin of the face it is important to clean the brushes regularly. This can be done with either specific brush-cleaning solutions or simply with a mild (in case of any reaction on the skin) shampoo. Wash them regularly by running the brushes under warm water, applying a small amount of cleanser, lathering and then rinsing clean. Make sure you leave the brushes standing upright or rested over the edge of the sink so they dry properly.

6. Be more healthy. They’re probably two of the most common New Year’s resolutions: stop smoking and eat healthier. Smoking can make you look older by increasing wrinkles and affecting your skin tone. What we eat is also reflected by our skin and by eating certain healthy foods and drinking more water you will help keep your skin glowing.
