Animal Facing Extinction Has Major Boost

Animal Facing Extinction Has Major Boost; Photocall Opportunity Wednesday 18 July 2007 at 11.30 am Odds Farm Park ● Nr High Wycombe, HP10 0LX

[UKPRwire, Tue Jul 17 2007] With only 60 registered breeding nannies left on planet earth, the humble Bagot Goat is as close to extinction as the Black Rhino or Sumatran Orangutan. Despite a 20% drop in numbers since 2006, the fight to save the Bagot continues and the breed received a much needed boost, with 6 successful births at Odds Farm Park; 4 male and 2 female kids.

Bagot goats are classified as critical by the United Kingdom Breeds at Risk Register and are one of the oldest known registered breed of goats in the UK. They date back to the 1300s when gifted, as believed, to Sir John Bagot by King Richard II following his return from the crusades.

Claire Middleton, Livestock Manager from Odds Farm Park comments:

“Bagot Goats have a lower than average reproduction rate and we are delighted to be able to contribute so much this year. We work with The Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) to ensure a strong and healthy blood line and to introduce our new arrivals into other suitable herds.”

Odds Farm Park is a recognised Rare Breed Centre and Open Farm and has one of the largest breeding herds of Bagot Goats in the UK.
