Going green – the easy way

[UKPRwire, Tue Mar 10 2009] Recycling might be a breeze to you by now, or you might be one of the many who don’t even know where to start. Many people are under the misapprehension that recycling is a laborious task, and makes little difference to the environment.
The truth is that recycling is simple and even recycling a few items a week makes a huge difference to the environment, so it’s well worth the small effort. The best way to start living green, even if you can’t find it in yourself to recycle, is to minimise your output, or your wastage.

Start by avoiding food waste. About one third of the food you buy gets thrown away and much of it could have been eaten. Look online for useful tips on food storage and advice on saving food and reducing your waste. This will also save you money.

Instead of sending old furniture, appliances or household items to the dump, give it to those in need, or hand it over to a local charity, or charity shop. Donate left-over paint to your local charity: find your nearest scheme at www.communityrepaint.org.uk. Look for recycling and waste reduction tips online at www.recyclenow.com.

Mail is a great source of unwanted clutter and waste, so reduce the amount of unwanted mail you receive by registering with the Mailing Preference Service to stop receiving addressed advertising mail like credit card applications. Contact the Royal Mail at mediacentre.customer.service@royalmail.co.uk to stop unaddressed, unsolicited marketing mail.

Recycle all the paper you can, as this is the easiest thing to recycle. Old bills, old journals, magazines which you no longer read, scrap paper, car and home insurance policy offers,...anything can go into a container and off to the recycling bin once a month or so. Just remember not to toss out your current bills, car and home insurance details and your current credit card applications!
