Within these walls - a garden that unites generations

Scottish TV personality and former Deacon Blue drummer Dougie Vipond notched up a career first when he officially opened a WALLED GARDEN, restored with the help of a £10,000 donation from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust in Scotland.

[UKPRwire, Fri Jun 19 2009] TV sports reporter Dougie Vipond scored a career first yesterday when he officially opened a WALLED GARDEN.

The one-and-a-half acre garden at the Scottish Miner’s convalescent home at Blair Castle in Dougie’s home village of Culross, Fife has been lovingly restored with the help of a £10,000 grant from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

Dougie, a former drummer with Deacon Blue said: “I’ve done my fair share of openings fetes, galas and flower shows, but never a walled garden.

“The garden brings together two generations, the retired miners who use the Home and the local school children who’ve been involved in the project.”

His three sons, Fin 11, Angus 8 and Hamish 6 all attend Culross Primary School which made scarecrows, including one dressed as a miner to protect young plants as the garden took shape.

Children from Culross Primary and Carronshore Primary on the opposite side of the River Forth attended yesterday’s official opening.

Scottish Trustee of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust Joe Thomas said: “We are really proud to be associated with this project.

“The herb garden will bring pleasure to the retired miners from the Home, and teach local children about the environment, plants and the benefits of herbs in cooking and medicine.

“The project meets two of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust’s key objectives of promoting healthy living and education related projects.”
