[UKPRwire, Mon Aug 17 2009] Diners visiting a Darrington hotel just off the A1 in West Yorkshire, have even more reason to give their taste buds a treat, after the popular venue received a top food hygiene rating.
Kyte Hotel on Great North Road was awarded an impressive five stars by Wakefield Council – the highest score possible - after a visit by environmental health officers. Among the aspects under scrutiny were food preparation and storage areas, food handling, safety procedures and control systems as well as the type of ingredients used.
Co-owner Jessica Barnes said everyone involved was delighted with the verdict, particularly award-winning head chef Damien O’Neill. Jessica attributed the success to the hard work of staff, the hotel’s investment in training and its strict hygiene policy.
“Every single member of staff from waiters to receptionists has food safety training and I’ve recently completed it myself,” she explained. “Among other things, we fitted easy to clean wall cladding to the kitchens when we took over last year and, although it was expensive, it was a very worthwhile investment. We go above and beyond any legal requirements to make sure that standards are as high as they possibly can be and this accolade shows that our efforts have paid off.”
The hotel has established a strong reputation for serving delicious, home-cooked food in the eight months since opening under the management of Jessica and her business partners Sharon Stubbs and Nigel Halmshaw. Now, as well as being able to expect an imaginative choice of freshly prepared dishes containing many local ingredients, customers can be confident that hygiene is paramount too.
Standards must be maintained at all times to retain the rating and the hotel will be inspected again in future. “It was a fantastic result for us and we are all very proud of the achievement,” added Jessica.
As part of Wakefield Council’s drive to encourage high standards, all food outlets in the borough are subject to rigorous inspections. Under an initiative named Scores on the Doors, a national public information service subscribed to by local authorities, people can find out the star rating of hundreds of restaurants, pubs, takeaways and other premises selling food. …/cont
A five star rating is officially `excellent’ and establishments that are awarded the top score are described as demonstrating `very high standards of compliance with food safety legislation and best practice in managing and achieving this.’
Kyte Hotel serves breakfasts, lunches and light bites as well as an extensive evening menu and customers can choose to eat in the stylish bar, tea room or restaurant. Speciality dishes and traditional Sunday lunches are also available and booking for the restaurant is advisable.
