Surrey Hills Restaurant and Pub Gets New Look, New Chef and an Exciting New Menu

After nearly one year as the proprietors of the Stephan Langton in Friday Street, Nr Abinger Common, Surrey, Chris and Rosie Robinson are pleased to unveil their new look country Inn and restaurant.

[UKPRwire, Fri Oct 05 2007] Set in an idyllic location beside Friday Street’s beautiful pond on the privately owned Wotton Estate, the Stephan Langton Inn has had something of a renaissance. Gone are the old dark colours and traditional pub-like interior and instead a modern, fresh and bright contemporary look as Rosie Robinson explained: “ We wanted to bring something completely new to the place and decided to be a little more daring and creative with the interior. We’ve used fabrics and wallpapers by Orla Kiely and a colour palette that is traditional but also bang up to date for that mix of old and new – our regulars and new customers seem to love it.”

The recent smoking ban also gave the Robinsons the chance to refurbish the bar and pub areas with a modern, yet fitting colour scheme of browns and taupes. But the smokers have not been forgotten as outside to the front and rear of the building there are plenty of tables and parasols nicely spaced amidst hanging baskets and pots.

The food of course has always been the star attraction at the Stephan Langton, drawing customers from near and afar. Many of the leading guidebooks feature the establishment including Michelin and The Good Food Guide. On the daily changing menu recent dishes have included a starter of baked beetroot and goats cheese with walnuts (£5.50), a main course or local pigeon breast and foie gras wrapped in cabbage leaves (£14.50) and for those with a sweet tooth, hot chocolate fondant with buttermilk ice cream (£5.50).

Dynamic young chef, Simon Adams previously of TV chef Tony Tobin’s Banstead, Surrey, Post Restaurant brings his own creative style and flair to the kitchen. Chris Robinson said: “ When we interviewed Simon and tasted his cooking we knew he would fit right in with us and our vision. He is a very accomplished chef and has the right mentality to really go places.”

Simon commented: “We have a great set up here at the Langton – Chris and Rosie give me the freedom to create and develop new dishes without being a slave to fashion. We have access to some great suppliers and I love nothing better than sourcing local produce and using what is in season. The food we produce is unpretentious yet full of flavour.”

Wine lovers and real ale drinkers are in for a treat too with an excellent selection of fine old and new world wines and locally produced ales including Surrey Hills Ranmore Ale and Hogs Back TEA.

The Stephan Langton is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday and for Sunday lunch.

The Stephan Langton at Friday Street – A Short History

The Stephan Langton is named after the reforming Archbishop of Canterbury, who set out to limit the excesses of King John in the early 13th century. There has been a pub in this location for hundreds of years. The current building was built in the 1930’s after the original was destroyed by fire.

The Stephan Langton Inn is a classic country pub located in the relaxed hamlet of Friday Street which snuggles between the ancient Pilgrim’s Way and Leith Hill, the highest point in the South of England. Around 5,000 acres of National Trust and Wotton Estate land offer an endless network of tracks and trails ideal for cycling, walking, riding or simply taking the views and quirks of this unspoilt setting. The area is steeped in history and is maintained as a wild, natural habitat
