The Chinese Year of the Rat, 2008 may not initially inspire many in a culinary sense, but national contract caterers, 7 Day Catering, are gearing up for the Chinese New Year with a new initiative to get the creative juices flowing.
[UKPRwire, Thu Dec 06 2007] For many years, 7 Day Catering have promoted their “Theme Day” programme to considerable success and this year they are appealing to their 1,100 workforce to submit their favourite recipe entries.
Spearheading the initiative is Mark Johnson, sales and marketing director at 7 Day Catering who explains: “Theme Day events always add a little bit of spice to our restaurants, and this year as we approach Chinese New Year we wanted everyone to get involved.
“The catering teams always make a huge effort, and as well as providing dishes from the country, they will dress up and decorate the restaurants with posters, fans, lanterns and oriental decorations. We have some fantastic chefs and kitchen staff, who really want to show off with their gastronomic delights – so we thought what better way than to open up a competition to find the best recipe – which in turn will be used across our 150 client base sites.
“It’s a little bit of recognition for what we think will be a great culinary challenge, not so much your beef in black bean sauce, more steamed scallops with mushroom shreds, home-made bean thread noodles, garlic and soy sauce - something for everyone to get excited about. Theme Days are great fun for all concerned, and it will definitely be more Ken Hom than Basil Fawlty!”
Chinese New Year falls on 7 of February 2008. The Chinese New Year is celebrated as the symbol of Spring's celebration. In fact in China the Chinese New Year is still called the Spring festival. It is celebrated after the fall harvest and before the spring planting season.
