[UKPRwire, Tue Dec 20 2005] The New Party is calling on everyone to take a little time over Christmas to reflect on those who are getting a raw deal from our modern society.
New Party spokesman Dr Nigel Knight: “Although most of us have benefited from a good education, a rewarding career and escalating property prices, the outlook for following generations is becoming steadily worse. Not only have a large number of our schools become second rate, but career options are disappearing fast and buying a home has become a nightmare for younger people.”
The season of goodwill is a good time to take stock and to consider what we could do to make our country better. We could perhaps give back state handouts which we do not really need. We could force our leaders to raise their game by challenging their spin. We might even stop buying newspapers which glory in the misfortunes of others. However, above all, we need to reflect on how fortunate we are to live in a democratic country. We do have a degree of control over our destiny, but we must recognise this by accepting more responsibility for outcomes. At the end of the day it will not be the fault of politicians, weak as they are, if the prospects of future generations are blighted by our own self-centred lifestyles.
Dr Knight:
“There is a growing need for people to take note of what is actually going on and to stop believing in the fairy stories of professional politicians. The divide between young and old, rich and poor has never been wider and things will not get better until we stop blaming those we elect for all our misfortunes.”
ENDS.
Notes for editors;
1. The National Insurance Fund exists in name only. In reality the government is spending the money on receipt and it will be left to future generations to pay for our pensions and healthcare. The cost of funding future public sector pension liabilities alone, if calculated in the same way as required of private sector companies, was estimated at £817 billion by the Institute of Economic Affairs. The Government however gave a figure in January 2005 of only £460 billion.
2. Our economy is over-dependent on the financial and service sectors. Sustainable progress and technological advance are inextricably linked to a healthy manufacturing base. Manufacturing output is increasing well in other countries such as the US but declining in the UK. Yet our comparative advantage in the financial and service sectors, which presently offsets our deficiencies in manufacturing, may be short-lived as international competition increases in these sectors, particularly from India, which now tops the Global Services Location Index (followed by China, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore). The UK has fallen back to 28th in the rankings, way behind the US which is 11th.
3. Revised growth figures to be published on Tuesday will show that China has overtaken Britain as the world’s fourth-largest economic power.
4. The think-tank Reform estimates that the policies of the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, have taken an additional 0.3 per cent per annum off the long-term trend rate of growth – compounding the ill effects of previous governments and the European Union.
5. Reversing the burden of high taxes, a welfare state that entrenches dependency and regulation that stifles business is essential if we are to have any future as a first rank nation. The New Party publication "Manifesto for a World Class Nation" sets out our vision for the future and details in plain language how we would achieve this vision.
6. New Party policies are designed to tackle problems which other parties seek to avoid.
