[UKPRwire, Sat Jan 14 2006] The former leader of the UK Independence Party, Jeffrey Titford MEP, has attacked the Government for allowing sex offenders to work in schools. Mr Titford, the MEP for the Eastern Counties, condemned the decision to allow a sex offender with a record of viewing internet child pornography to work as a P E teacher in a school in his constituency as “an offence against all common sense”.

Mr Titford said: “Someone needs to speak up for the nation’s children. I am appalled that anyone whose name appears on a sex offenders list should even be considered for a job in a school. For this particular man to be cleared by a Government Minister to be involved with school children, who will presumably be changing clothes under his supervision, goes beyond stupidity. Whatever happened to common sense?

“The Education Secretary’s behaviour in the House of Commons has merely added insult to injury. At first she sought to avoid making a statement on this appalling matter, then when compelled to do so by the Speaker, managed to avoid providing a single meaningful answer to any of the highly significant questions put to her. As a result of her obfuscation, we have absolutely no idea how many sex offenders are working in our schools.

“Someone needs to speak up for the nation’s children. They have been profoundly let down by this Government and I believe the ministers responsible should do the honourable thing and resign”.
