Charity delivers Meals on Wheels Makeover in Essex
[UKPRwire, Wed Nov 19 2008] Older people’s charity, WRVS, has launched a new community meals service called The Tasty Food Company that aims to challenge the perception that meals delivered to people at home are not the sort of food most people would want to eat.
The charity’s new venture launches in South Essex this month, and turns the out of date stereotypical view of Meals on Wheels on its head with the promise to deliver a wide choice of home-cooked quality meals to older people in the county.
“People we talked to in Essex in their 60s, 70s and 80s told us that they didn’t class themselves as ‘older people’ and didn’t necessarily want meals delivered to them every day. But they were interested in meals delivered at home from time to time, perhaps when they hadn’t had time to get to the shops, when they were unwell or just out of hospital or when entertaining friends” explained WRVS food manager, Ian Taylor, who’s heading up the new venture.
“That’s why we’re offering great quality chilled meals that are tasty and nutritious that people might expect to buy in a quality supermarket, and delivering them when people want them. People in Essex told us that they want choice, home-cooked quality, value and convenience and that’s what we’re delivering,” Ian explained.
The service offers the convenience of being able to choose what you want to eat, when you want it and have it delivered to your door by a trusted and friendly WRVS delivery person.
The extensive menu includes something for all tastes: traditional roast dinner, exotic Morrocan tagine, poached sole with lemon and herb sauce and a host of veggie options, salads and soups. Pudding lovers are well catered for too with sticky toffee pudding, banana pudding with butterscotch sauce and gooseberry fool on the menu.
“One important difference between WRVS and other home delivery food services is that our customers know that they can expect a friendly and trusted WRVS employee or volunteer to deliver their meals.
“Our people are trained to check that everything is okay with our customers at home and will raise the alarm and support them to get help if needed. So we offer extra peace of mind as well as a great meals delivery service,” Ian Taylor added.
The charity hopes people in Essex will like the great-quality, good value food so much that they will be able to take the service to other parts of the country in future.
