Employers urged to look after staff welfare during economic turbulence
Acclaimed naturopath Rumana Zahn is urging North East businesses not to forget the wellbeing of their staff amid concerns over economic gloom.
[UKPRwire, Fri Nov 14 2008] Acclaimed naturopath Rumana Zahn is urging North East businesses not to forget the wellbeing of their staff amid concerns over economic gloom.
Rumana said: “The impact of the credit crunch has been widely reported and it’s not difficult to draw parallels between health and wealth. If a business’ financial health coughs and splutters, the reality is that it will also affect employees’ health.”
Rumana’s call follows in the wake of a number of studies and claims that the economic woes are affecting health and wellbeing.
The Trades Union Congress (TUC), recently commissioned research that showed stress or overwork is the most commonly reported safety hazard. TUC General Secretary, Brendan Barber, said: “As the recession starts to bite, stress is likely to increase even more. Employers that tackle stress at work can improve their staff's health and wellbeing, and boost productivity. In these trying economic times, it's vital that employers and unions work together to reduce stress at work.”
Even the Samaritans are experiencing increased calls as a direct effect of the stress of the current financial climate.
Rumana said: “From claims that employees work longer in credit crunch to research showing stress and overwork is the most commonly reported safety hazard, wellbeing at work is a priority that should not be ignored.”
Rumana runs a groundbreaking Wellbeing at Work programme, which is delivered through a series of bite-sized workshops. It aims to help workers become pro-active in their healthcare so that they can maintain wellbeing and prevent future illnesses, whatever challenges they face.
She is currently working with a number of businesses, both nationally and in the North East of England, who recognise the importance of a pro-active approach in managing the stresses and strains experienced by their workforce.
This includes a major international music company where Rumana is working with management to introduce a Wellbeing Week to help employees experience a sample of the activities on offer to manage wellbeing. Rumana is also assisting a legal company in the North East to launch Wellbeing initiatives, including the development of a personal wellbeing programme for its staff.
Rumana concluded: “The workshops help employers tackle stress at work which can lead to improvement in their staff's health and wellbeing, boosting productivity.
“In these challenging economic times, it's vital that employers and staff work together to reduce stress at work. Acting now in a coordinated way is particularly pertinent in the current climate.”
Top tips to avoid stress
1. Focus on your diet and decide to make healthy choices.
2. Get physical and start doing a little more exercise even if it’s a five minute lunch-time walk.
3. Get plenty of daylight. Vitamin D is essential and we need more of it over winter.
4. Be positive and pro-active; it won't happen unless you make it happen.
5. Laugh more and enjoy life!
