Hearing loss and reluctance to use hearing aids in Scotland.
[UKPRwire, Fri Jul 03 2009] According to research commissioned by Hidden Hearing to mark National Deaf Awareness Week, almost a third of Scots have to ask people to frequently repeat things, while a fifth find it hard to follow conversations in a crowed environment. These problems can often be the cause of some embarrassment – particularly at social gatherings.
While they would all know to go to the opticians if their eyesight deteriorates or the dentist if with toothache, a quarter (24%) of Scots have no idea where to go to request a hearing test. As a result many hearing problems go undetected.
Impaired hearing is not necessarily associated with old age. Listening to mp3 players, talking on mobile phones or listening to surround sound systems can all cause damage to our inner ears.
For some people the signs are there and they just don’t acknowledge they need help. Perhaps they don’t hear properly in business meetings, miss the name of someone they’re being introduced to, or have the TV or radio turned up so loudly that others comment. All can be embarrassing situations.
Most people are reluctant to seek help as they have an outdated image of hearing aids. Today, they benefit from the best technology and are very discrete and can greatly enhance your quality of life and general wellness.
