Icelandic Health Authorities and Blue Lagoon Spa Sign Agreement to Fund Treatment and Research for S

An agreement has been signed between the world famous spa and the Icelandic government to fund psoriasis and eczema treatment and research.

[UKPRwire, Fri Feb 16 2007] On the heals of promising findings in the treatment of skin conditions at the spa, Iceland’s Minister of Health and the Blue Lagoon’s CEO have signed a six-year agreement to expand psoriasis and eczema research and treatment.

Findings have shown that regular bathing in the Blue Lagoon’s geothermal seawater, in combination with light therapy, can be more effective than other psoriasis and eczema treatment options. The method is natural and without side effects. The skin care products developed at the spa are also a key part of the healing process. The Blue Lagoon is focused on increasing the knowledge of its effective skincare treatments and strengthening the international competitiveness and recognition of the Icelandic health care system.

Under the terms of the multi-year agreement, Blue Lagoon will provide psoriasis and eczema patients access to the spa’s natural medications and treatment methods with the costs to be covered by Icelandic health insurance. The treatments are provided by the Blue Lagoon Clinic, and involve a combination of bathing in the lagoon’s mineral-rich waters and light therapy. A nurse and dermatologist oversee the light therapy, consultations, and treatments.

The two parties also signed a four-year agreement to fund further research. The grant from the Ministry will cover research on the effectiveness of the treatment and provide for international marketing of the option to perspective patients.

Grímur Sæmundsen, CEO of Blue Lagoon, said the research will represent a key continuation of studies that are already in progress.

“The studies are an important tool for the treatment to gain international recognition,” he said.
