Developing fast paced walking as part of your exercise regime into your everyday life will soon become easy and will help to get you fit and healthy in no time. Get The Right Kit – Invest in a good pair of trainers. It is important that your foot and ankle are supported. This will help to prevent injuries, but also improve posture which will increase muscle activity. If you are wanting to walk cross country you should invest in a lightweight pair of walking boots, that are again effective in supporting both your foot and ankle.
Pace – Government guidelines suggest we should be walking briskly, at around 4mph for 30 minutes, five days a week. 4mph is a brisk pace; imagine the speed you’d walk if you were late for an appointment. This pace is great cardiovascular exercise and will soon improve your fitness.
Goal – Set a goal. The majority of health professionals recommend a target of 10,000 steps a day, which is roughly a distance of five miles. Set this as your final target. Begin by trying to achieve 4,000 steps, increasing this gradually until you reach your final goal.
Route – Make your walks as enjoyable as possible. This way you are more likely to walk a greater distance. Mix your routine up by taking walking trips to national parks.
The Right Technique – Getting the right technique will help to improve fitness and burn more calories. The heel of your foot should hit the ground first, then roll your foot through to the toe. Try also, to take shorter steps rather than longer steps as this will decrease the amount of impact on the joints, and help prevent injuries.
Get a Pedometer – This make sound obvious but to get a clear and precise idea of your progress buying a pedometer is a great idea. When buying a pedometer be sure to get one with a double axis sensor as these are more accurate.
Fit it in – Fitting walking into your daily routine can be easier than you think. Why not try going for a quick 10-15 minute walk whilst on your lunch break. Leave the car at home and walk to work, or get off the bus a few stops early and walk the rest of the distance home.
