National Diabetes Week 11-18th June: Kitbags by Desang help raise awareness for diabetes

National Diabetes week begins on Sunday and Desang’s kitbags are helping raise awareness and funds for Diabetes UK

[UKPRwire, Fri Jun 09 2006] Sue Marshall found a way of making a problem into an opportunity for diabetics everywhere. With 2 million people suffering with diabetes in the UK today, she has invented a unique way to make living with the condition easier. Desang’s kitbags are the answer for people with diabetes who want to take the pressure out of carrying around all that they need – including needles.

Resembling a filofax, they are carry-cases designed for diabetes. As she has diabetes herself, Sue knows exactly what it was needed. She says "Like many people, I had a busy life and like some, I had diabetes too. This meant that I had to be extra organised but didn't want diabetes to stand in they way of living a normal life. I needed something to carry around the various pieces of equipment I needed to control the condition but I wanted something practical and professional to accommodate it all. I thought they’d be useful for any diabetic, but particularly for travellers or for those wanting special organisation, such as a child or the elderly. People find them particularly useful for holidays or business travel. Having a professional looking bag not only makes going through customs less problematic but it also fits in with a working lifestyle.”

Sue’s customers agree and she has had a great deal of positive reaction to the product including such prestigious company as the Deputy Prime Minister. The Rt Hon John Prescott MP, who also has diabetes, wrote: “The kitbag looks great and will certainly come in very handy indeed. Thank you very much for thinking of me.”

Other responses have been equally positive. “I travel a lot on business on planes, trains and automobiles; this makes carrying all the kit a hassle. Twice last month I was short of needles and once ran out of insulin while at an airport. Your Classic kitbag is perfect for my work and lifestyle” says businessman Chris Oggelsby. Hardened business traveller Peter Ebdon adds his testimonial.
"I bought a Classic Kitbag prior to going off to Thailand on business a couple of weeks ago. I'm thrilled that my Classic Kitbag works like a dream for me. For the first time in my life getting through an airport security system was easy. In both Bangkok and London all I did was to unzip the kitbag and the Security Office immediately saw the contents all together and understood that it was needed for my diabetes. I undertake approximately 100 to 120 international long-haul airflights per year so life is suddenly much easier.”

With such positive feedback Sue realised that there was opportunity to support diabetes generally. “As I realised the potential for the kitbags I also saw an opportunity to give something to Diabetes UK and raise funds for them. With National Diabetes Awareness Week coming up, this is an ideal time to highlight the good work that the charity does. I’ve been a member of Diabetes UK most of my life, and wanted to be able to help raise awareness and support funding, so I approached the charity to become a partner and raise funds with each kitbag sale.”

Diabetes is a condition that is growing in the UK and Diabetes UK is the UK’s leading charity for people who have the condition, with more than 220,000 members. For every kitbag sold in association with Diabetes UK, Desang Limited will pay £1 to Diabetes UK Services Limited which donates its taxable profits to Diabetes UK (Registered charity number 215199).
