Raising awareness of Breastfeeding in the UK

Rates for breastfeeding are still low in the UK, despite efforts to raise them. What can businesses do to support the cause?

[UKPRwire, Sat Dec 19 2009] There are still a number of reasons why breastfeeding take-up is low in many areas and these are the areas that need the help and support to raise the awareness amongst the local mums. The NHS in the UK is working hard at raising awareness of breastfeeding and has worked closely with local communities to train midwifes and healthcare workers, though there is still some work to be done on after care support.

What's the challenges that communities face raising awareness of breastfeeding:

the mental block of mums of finding breastfeeding intrusive on themselves and the unwillingness of feeding in public
Lack of education/information for mums to make them aware of the benefits of breastfeeding
lack of funding to hold events to raise awareness for breastfeeding or provide support to mums

These challenges large as they are can be overcome which is where businesses who specialise in mother and babies can help. These businesses can work with their communities offering support in raising awareness of breastfeeding. Local communities have been asking and getting donated breastfeeding clothes to support a number of events, funding events in the form of prizes or printed literature which focuses on educating local mums.
A key thing which new mums asking for is comfortable and discreet breastfeeding clothes which they can wear when they are out and about which makes it easier for them to feed. Breastfeeding tops are available in every size, colour and style which helps these mums to feel easier when they are out and about. Nursing clothes are becoming a vital item to buy alongside maternity clothes.

Supporting community projects is an important part of any business and it is the social responsibility of companies to invest their time to help. If together we can help to raise the awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding, we are empowering women to make informed decisions on how to care for their babies as opposed to taking on others views.

Taj has set up Milkbug to cater for the breastfeeding mum and has helped a number of local community initiatives to raise breastfeeding awareness. http://www.milkbug.co.uk has more information.
