Don’t give in to yourself! These are some of the most common excuses:
- I don’t enjoy exercising
- I’m too self-conscious and feel silly when I exercise
- I’m not very good at exercising
- I’m too tired
- I don’t have the time.
• What’s your motivation? Whether you want improve your strength, health and fitness or just want to lose some weight to fit into a new outfit, you need to define why you have started exercising. Focus on how great you’ll feel when you start seeing the benefits or reach your end goal and use this to stay focused and excited about exercise.
• When are you going to exercise? Models Direct suggest allocating specific times to exercise which you can write down in your diary or calendar. This way it will stay in your head so you can’t use the ‘I forgot’ excuse. If you’re exercising at the same time each week you’ll also settle down into a routine.
• Find a friend. Working out is much more fun when you’re with a friend whether you join a gym class or for a jog around your local park. As well as getting some exercise it also allows you to keep up to date with all of the gossip and maybe make some new friends. Models Direct suggest choosing your exercise buddy carefully, you want to be able to motivate each other and you want someone who won’t fall for your excuses.
• Find a distraction. Exercising can be pretty boring and make you want to finish as soon as possible. If this is the case find something that can distract you to make the time go quicker, you may be surprised by how long you go one for! If you’re doing cardio on an exercise bike or walking on a treadmill find yourself a good book to read. If you’re jogging or working on more energetic equipment, find some upbeat music to get you in the mood. You could even combine the two and get some audio books.
• Don’t give up. With exercise, especially if you haven’t done any since school, Models Direct remind you that you won’t see the positive effects straight away. However, if you persevere you will soon begin to see a more toned and healthier you. It is also important not to push yourself too hard too soon. Instead, build up the length and intensity of your routine gradually.
