New TV Show for over-55's

Goodbye, 9 to 5 is the UK's new TV programme especially for people who are retired, or who "aspire to retire"!

[UKPRwire, Wed Sep 23 2009] From 1st October 2009, one of Britain's biggest yet least catered-for TV audiences gets its own TV programme at prime time on one of the UK's most individual and forward looking satellite channels.

At 7.30pm on Information TV, Sky 166 and Freesat 402, on the Friday 2nd October, the first mainstream edition of Goodbye, 9 to 5, is broadcast as the first of a new weekly series aimed at Britain's over-55 population.

The show is produced by Serious Leisure TV, who already produce niche programmes like The Caravan Channel, which has been running for over 3 years and produced over 70 fortnightly editions. Goodbye 9 to 5 will follow The Caravan Channel, which broadcasts at 7pm on the same days, to make the The Serious about Leisure Hour on Information TV, from 7pm to 8pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Goodbye, 9 to 5 will also broadcast at 11.30am on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Producer and presenter Chris Gosling said that the older and retired population is one that major broadcasters find easy to ignore. "The television business has always had a youth-audience bias - TV broadcasters are driven to towards building tomorrow's audience at the cost of ignoring today's."

"The older population is always seen as a difficult audience and marketplace to approach, but that's essentially because no-one has thought about it from the right viewpoint. As a busy and very active 63-year old individual myself, I think I'm uniquely placed to understand the market we're approaching." He added, "The key fact to remember is that most people in the older generation still enjoy all the aspects of life that they used to, but now are able to express themselves more fully, and have the life-experience to be clear about what they want, need and are interested in."

The new programme has a magazine format, and will try, says Gosling, "to avoid being worthy and sanctimonious!"

"Unlike many TV programmes and publications," he said, "we'll be addressing problem areas directly - for instance, in our first programme, we've discovered one group of long-serving but now long retired soldiers and service people, whose unfair treatment should be a cause for national concern - and we are highlighting their situation for the whole nation."

"Later in the series, we'll be casting our eyes over politics and politicians, too - so expect some fireworks from us and our viewers!"

Goodbye, 9 to 5 is produced by Serious Leisure TV, and is broadcast by Information TV on Sky channel 166 and Freesat 402. From 2nd October 2009 it is broadcast at 7.30pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, as part of The Serious about Leisure Hour between 7pm and 8pm, and at 11.30am on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

The programme has its own website and in-house social networking pages at www.goodbye925.tv, and is also on Twitter and Facebook - search for "Goodbye 9 to 5"
