Homes built in flood risk zones

Houses are being built in areas which the Environment Agency has highlighted as being at risk of flooding.

[UKPRwire, Sun Nov 18 2007] The organisation claims that 13 major developments went ahead in 2006/07 against its advice on flood risk.

It means that houses and bungalows are being constructed in areas that may soon be submerged by water and could spell problems for the owners in the future when they come to sell their home.

"This past year local planning authorities still granted planning permission for 13 major developments against our advice - seven of these in areas of the highest flood risk - and this is unacceptable," said Barbara Young, chief executive of the agency.

"If these major developments go ahead, they could put life and property at risk and bring misery to occupiers.

"The summer 2007 floods showed the damage that flooding, either from rivers or from surface water can cause. The right decisions about the location, design and nature of development must be made to protect people and the environment," she added.
