Abacus signs franchise agreement with Samsung

Signs agreement with memory world leader

[UKPRwire, Tue Aug 14 2007] Abacus Group today announced that it has signed a UK franchise agreement with Samsung Semiconductor Europe, the world’s largest manufacturer of memory and second largest semiconductor manufacturer. Following the agreement, Abacus Group has five of the world’s top seven semiconductor manufacturers on its line card.

According to Ed Hogan, Sales Manager at Samsung Semiconductor Europe, “We see growing demand for memory in the industrial market. Abacus complements our existing distribution network in the UK, providing Samsung with a technical demand creation partner offering strong relationships with industrial customers. Our new partnership enables Abacus to provide a more complete solution to these customers, and Samsung to address their needs more effectively.”

Martin Brooks, Abacus Group Technical Director, commented, “We are delighted to have signed a franchise agreement with Samsung, a world leading partner. Samsung is investing strongly in its semiconductor business, specifically in its manufacturing capability, and we are excited about the opportunity to work with them to grow demand for their technologies in the UK.”

He added, “Decreasing price differential between 32-bit and 8-bit processors is leading a growing number of customers to use more powerful processors to enhance the functionality of their products. In consequence, their need for memory devices is increasing. Samsung’s portfolio of memory solutions are a great fit with our established, successful lines of 32 bit microcontrollers and Embedded Single Board computers, and enable us to take advantage of this market opportunity. We will be focussing initially on the industrial and embedded markets for solid state memory and Hard Disk Drives.”

Samsung has been the world’s second largest manufacturer of semiconductors since 2002 according to Dataquest. It has been the world’s number one manufacturer of memory chips for 14 years, number one in DRAM for 15 years, number one in SRAM for 12 years and number one in Flash for 4 years. Samsung Electronic Components has led the world’s semiconductor industry in terms of capex since 2004.
