Web Filtering Technology Adopted By Local Authority To Regulate Staff’s Online Activity

[UKPRwire, Thu Nov 08 2007] Bloxx, the European enterprise web filtering specialist, today announced that Kerry Local Authorities has selected its web filtering technology to regulate and protect its staff as they surf the Internet. After comparing a number of solutions, the Bloxx solution was selected as it provided a more comprehensive and cost-effective solution to enable the Local Authority manage and prevent both offensive and inoffensive non-work related sites being viewed.

Padraig Daughton, IS Analyst with Kerry County Council explained that the system has also helped protect the Council’s computer systems from computer viruses and other malicious software. “Bloxx provides us with the desired functionality and low administration cost for implementing the web control and risk minimisation aspects of our ICT Policy.”

Kerry Local Authorities initially evaluated web filtering technology from a number of vendors but found that for the most part the solutions had to be run in tandem with Microsoft ISA Server and also an upstream proxy server for antivirus filtering. These other solutions proved not only cumbersome to install and manage but also were extremely costly. “Once we looked at the Bloxx appliance, we realised that it did everything we required with utmost simplicity,” comments Daughton.

Kerry Local Authorities has installed the Bloxx web filtering appliance in proxy mode, ensuring all clients must first authenticate and then only access the internet through the device. The free and included anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-phishing software means that the Local Authority can ensure further enhanced security on its network. The Bloxx appliance also monitors all download activity to give the Local Authority increased visibility over the types of software packages and files that are being downloaded.

“Using the web is a vital productivity tool in the workplace but too often major security breaches can take place due to non-work related use,” comments Bloxx Sales and Marketing Director, Paul Irvine. “Organisations should follow the example set by Kerry Local Authorities and proactively manage on-line activity, thus ensuring that both their employees and IT networks not compromised from the threats that exist on the Internet.
