[UKPRwire, Fri Jul 27 2007] Sybase® iAnywhere®, Inc., a subsidiary of Sybase, Inc. (NYSE: SY), and Helveta today announced that their combined software solution, TracElite, is being used by the Perum Perhutani plantation in Indonesia to accurately track timber and ensure sustainable and legal production of its tropical hardwood resources.
Working in association with The Tropical Forest Trust, Helveta configured TracElite - a software solution combining handheld computing and Internet technologies - to meet the needs of the retail and timber trades in managing and sourcing hardwood timber in an authorised and sustainable manner. TracElite features UltraLite® and MobiLink®, mobile components of Sybase iAnywhere’s industry-leading database management and data movement technology, SQL Anywhere®.
Throughout the world it is estimated that 1.5 acres of rainforest are destroyed every second as a result of illegal logging - an activity the World Bank estimates is costing developing countries in excess of $10 billion a year.
TracElite provides seamless traceability, improved production efficiency and compliance checking across logging supply chains. This in turn can enable timber companies to achieve much sought after Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. FSC certification demonstrates a commitment to legal and sustainable operations, and allows premium pricing to be charged for traceable, certified product.
Indonesia has faced a long battle with illegal logging. The 2.5 million hectare Perum Perhutani plantation owner and its advisor, The Tropical Forest Trust, wanted to tackle these issues, and recommended TracElite to Perhutani to help strengthen the plantation’s Chain of Custody control - the trail of legal ownership for an asset - as it prepared for FSC certification.
Using TracElite, the Perum Perhutani plantation can track its timber throughout the supply chain in the system’s two pilot sites, and plans to gradually roll out the system to a further 55 locations. There is a minimum of 30 users per site, so potentially upwards of 1600 people will ultimately be using the system once rollout is complete.
The logging process starts with pre-harvest inventory recording in the plantation using a sophisticated, but low-cost, barcode tagging system. The system pinpoints tree locations for back-to-stump traceability and uses this approach to prevent timber of non-verifiable origin entering the supply chain.
Data collected during barcode scanning also allows accurate calculations of volume per tree or log. Since the TracElite rules engine compares timber flows at all points in the supply chain, a system of checks, balances and tolerances detects suspicious activity and can highlight the possibility of illegal timber entering the supply chain. All the data capture software is managed and deployed remotely across the Internet, meaning updates and enhancements can take place without anyone having to leave the forest.
Underpinning TracElite is UltraLite and MobiLink, the industry leading mobile technologies from Sybase iAnywhere. UltraLite provides a database management system ideal for the small footprint mobile devices used by TracElite customers, and MobiLink provides the highly scalable synchronisation technology required to exchange data between databases and data sources. With TracElite in place, Perum Perhutani is taking significant steps to achieving its aim of FSC certification.
Scott Poynton, Executive Director, Tropical Forest Trust, explained: “With TracElite, every tree is numbered in the system. If there are two trees with the same number the plantation knows that a barcode has been photocopied. Auditors on the other side of the world also get visibility of the whole process 24 hours a day so when that second tag is recorded, it flags an error and the auditor can see that via the Internet. The issue is logged in the audit database and the Chain of Custody partner is automatically notified to investigate the issue with the supplier.”
Transtoto Handadhari, Executive Director of the Perum Perhutani plantation,
explained: “With TracElite we are supported, and it allows us to provide a superior product and achieve our ambition of operating the best tropical forest management in the world.”
Helveta’s choice of Sybase iAnywhere’s technology to support TracElite was crucial for two main reasons: firstly, the timber industry is notoriously techno- sceptic so it had to be 100% trustworthy. Secondly, TracElite is deployed in the most remote and challenging places on Earth, so the technology had to be ultra- reliable and able to work in isolated places where IT support is non-existent and communication links are weak.
“With TracElite, Helveta is able to provide suppliers and governments with the tools to combat the threat that illegal logging poses to the global environment,” explained Patrick Newton, Managing Director, Helveta. “After a thorough assessment process, Sybase iAnywhere clearly offered the best technology - a superior solution that delivers the robustness and reliability our customers require.”
Alison Henderson, Operations Director, Sybase iAnywhere added "Helveta's needs were typical of many customers. Their mobile users are remote and absolutely have to be able to depend on the robustness and reliability of the application and its ability to synchronise database to HQ. SQL Anywhere delivered that and this new capability is clearly increasing the profitability of the plantation by proving logging source through TracElite."
