Photoelectric sensor range offers longest range with lowest power

[UKPRwire, Fri Oct 12 2007] Carlo Gavazzi has introduced a new range of photoelectric sensors representing state of the art in terms of range, power consumption and user features. The new PD30 range covers most sensing tasks in a compact package, offering detection range previously only achievable with much larger devices. In addition, they embody a variety of new user features, such as a dust alarm output, remote teach input, full- and half-mute functions, aimed at simplifying setup and reducing down-time.

From the start, models are available for diffuse, retro reflective and polarised retro reflective operation: through beam, transparent polarised retro reflective, and background suppression versions are planned for introduction over the next six months. Range is double that of previous sensors, and more: 1m for diffuse sensing, up to 6m for retro reflective versions.

The PD30 comes in a industry standard 10.8 x 20 x 30 mm housing style with 25.4mm spacing using two M3 holes. Connection is via cable or built in M8 connector.

Setup is simplified by using either the sensor's teach button or a remote teach wire. Teach mode can be invoked on-the-fly whilst unauthorised tampering is eliminated by connecting the remote teach wire to the power supply, thereby disabling to the push button.

A half-mute function assists in alignment and range-setting. Activating the mute function (> 3 sec.) sets the emitter at half power. Sensors are aligned using this setting, then switched to full power to provide sufficient margin for correct sensor function, even when the beam is attenuated by dust or water droplets.

Two options are offered to provide diagnostic warnings: dust alarm output or mute input. Both ensure proper sensing verification. With the dust output active, the sensor will set an alarm output if it receives an unsafe signal level for more than 10 ms. This reduces down-time by ensuring that dirty sensors are cleaned when required. Full-mute checks for a blocked or malfunctioning sensor, by periodically turning the emitter on and off via the mute function (0-3 sec.), again ensuring that faults are detected as early as possible.

PD30 sensors operate from a 10-30V DC supply and are available with either PNP or NPN outputs. They are IP67 rated against dust and moisture ingress, and carry CE markings, with UL approvals pending.
