The modelling industry is slowly becoming more inclusive, and there are more opportunities for models who do not fit the stereotypical age, height and weight specifications. Continuing this pattern, modelling agency Models Direct are pleased to see that Debenhams have chosen to use a disabled model in advertising for one clothing range.

The beautiful model, Shannon Murray, has been in a wheelchair since she broke her neck in her teens. However, this hasnít restricted her modelling career. "Iíve been modelling for over 14 years," Shannon says on her blog. "But this time it was different. As I was getting ready in hair and make up, the potential of this shoot really struck me; another small step towards inclusion and representation of disability. I hope the images challenge a few misconceptions about disability; itís been a long time coming."

Models Direct couldnít agree more and are pleased to see that the department store are making an effort to truly represent their customers. Shannon is featured alongside other models who are fighting the stereotypes in the advertisements, which are being used for the ĎPrinciples by Ben de Lisií range in stores and online. The other models involved are size 16 Kate Fullman, petite 5"4 Tess Montgomery and Tokumbo Daniel, who is a size 10.

The decision to include these models came when disability campaigners and presenters of the show How to Look Good Naked, with a Difference Nikki Fox and Natasha Wood approached the department store. The ĎPrinciples by Ben di Lisií range comes in sizes 8 to 20 with a range of petite clothing as well, making it the perfect choice for using models of different sizes.

"We cater for women of all shapes and sizes, young and old, non-disabled and disabled, so we wanted our windows to reflect this choice," Deputy Chief Executive of Debenhams, Michael Sharp, told the Telegraph. "When Nikki and Natasha approached us with the idea, we didnít have to think twice. We are proud to be the first high street retailer to deliver this. We only wished we had done it sooner."

Models Direct think this is a great step forward to the inclusion of all types of people into the modelling world and hope that many more retailers follow suit.
