With thanks to social media, more internet users, faster broadband and advertiser confidence, the digital advertising sector is looking in great shape having grown in expenditure by 2,200 per cent in the last decade.

The latest report published by the Internet Marketing Bureau (IAB) details the astonishing spending figures for online marketing which proves online marketing is thriving despite the rest of the advertising industry suffering at the hands of the economic decline. Total expenditure on internet advertising increased by 4.2 per cent between 2008 and 2009, with the latter half of 2009 seeing advertisers plough the most money into online marketing.

Israr Sarwar, Operations Director at leading internet marketing agency Adrac, said; "If the trend continues, 2010 could see further growth in the online advertising sector which mirrors the spectacular growth in the popularity of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter."

"By using the social media sector as an advertising medium, online marketers are able to engage with a large number of web users and these particular sites allow advertisers to create engaging and entertaining advertisements."
