The firm currently has three trainee solicitors on its books, including new starter Samina Rashid; Fiona Hyde, who has just completed one year of her course; and Amy Cusworth, who is coming to the end of her two-year training contract with Oxley and Coward Solicitors LLP.

Throughout the 24 month programme, each trainee must gain experience in at least three legal departments (or seats as they are called) and are constantly assessed before they are adjudged to have completed enough areas successfully to become fully fledged, qualified solicitors and practitioners of Law.

The training schedule for solicitors is one of the most demanding of any profession and while trainees start at the bottom, far from ‘making the tea’, legal training demands looking at some of the very serious issues that Oxley & Coward Solicitors LLP deals with, but with the support of the senior team and fee-earners where required.

The training provided by Oxley and Coward Solicitors LLP is part of the Professional Skills Course (PSC) for lawyers and is one of the final stages on the path to becoming a fully qualified solicitor. It gives trainees the opportunity to put into practice what they have learned in a real life situation and also gives the law firm the opportunity to assess the skills of potential new talent. You cannot qualify as a solicitor without passing the PSC, so it remains the benchmark for all aspiring lawyers.

Amy Cusworth, who is coming to the end of her training contract has been working with Rebecca Stopford in Company & Commercial Law and has recently been helping Rebecca to advise clients at this year’s Enterprise Show, held last month at Meadowhall - a good example of the ‘hands on’ nature of the training involved.

"Not many solicitors of our size take on so many trainees," explained Oxley and Coward’s Partner and Training Principal, Richard Sheppard. "The number we take on has grown over the last few years and we see it as a real investment in future talent. Taking on trainees is of course not cheap, particularly in today’s difficult economic climate, but Oxley & Coward remains optimistic and committed to encouraging and developing the skills of the local talent of the future. In return, our current trainees have rewarded us with the highest levels of commitment and hard work. I am delighted with the progress they have made, and expect all of them to pass their PSC with flying colours."

"We have held Investors in People status for over ten years and take our approach to training very seriously, not just for trainees, but for all staff in general," added Oxley and Coward’s Practice Manager Peter Hedley. "Clients expect that all our staff deliver the highest standards available; likewise, we demand that all our staff complete ongoing training to ensure they remain the best in the business. We are proud of our record on training and remain committed to investing heavily in it in the future."
