The £6.4 million Djanogly Community Leisure Centre in Nottingham, designed by Archial Architects, specialists in the sport and leisure sector, has been opened.

Located on the same site as Djanogly City Academy, this new community leisure centre provides a six-lane, 25m swimming pool with full moveable floor, a changing village, a 50 station fitness suite, sauna and steam rooms and a dance/activity studio.

The new building has been cleverly designed to fit on the site without imposing on the residential properties backing onto it. The design respects the requirements of the local community for additional privacy and includes obscured external glazing and integral blinds to all the viewing windows to the pool, fitness gym and dance/activity studio.

Justin Ashworth, Senior Associate at Archial, said, "As Djanogly Community Leisure Centre is situated within the grounds of the Norman Foster Associates-designed Djanogly City Academy, certain aspects of its design – such as the overhanging eaves and the colonnade – take their cue from the Academy in order to complement the existing architecture.

"A particularly interesting aspect of this project is the regeneration benefits it delivers insofar as it meets the broader government aspirations of combining community facilities with education facilities to create community hubs.

"The proximity of Djanogly Community Leisure Centre to the Academy on the same site and sharing the same car park means that the site is now open to the community throughout the day and evening. It is hoped that the greater degree of inclusiveness this fosters will act as a catalyst for community regeneration."

Djanogly Community Leisure Centre is part of Nottingham City Council’s £32 million Leisure Centre Transformation Programme to improve the city’s sports provision. It has been funded by Nottingham City Council and also received a £2.2 million contribution from the Neighbourhood Development Company as well as a £1 million grant from Sport England’s Swim Modernisation Programme.
