In an economic climate where expenditure is under heavy scrutiny, corporate legal departments are no exception as they are forced to devise creative solutions to soften the burden of increasing legal fees and the growing popularity of litigation processes.

They say "the best defence is a good offence," so perhaps the best way to have a positive impact on the law departmentís budget is to create revenue. This was the strategy adopted by E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co.ís legal team with the introduction of its Legal Recoveries Initiative, which since 2004 has added nearly $1.2 billion in recoveries to DuPont Legalís bottom line.

Thomas L. Sager, DuPontís Senior Vice President and General Counsel is the leading thinker behind DuPontís Legal Recoveries Initiative, and is scheduled to speak at Legal Spend Management conference in February (CCT Venues Canary Wharf, in London), where he will detail DuPontís program and provide tips to help other law departments replicate it.

Also sharing their expertise at Legal Spend Management conference will be leading General Counsels from companies such as Nestle, Tyco, Genpact, Cisco, Alstom Transport, Unisys, demonstrating how theyíve significantly driven down their legal expenses in the past 24 months - without compromising quality.
