HE can fix it – handyman Scott Watts rolled up his sleeves and got to work on his own business after he lost his job as the recession bit home.

Mr Watts, 35, was thrown out of work at the worst possible time – it was Christmas 2008 and he and his wife, Naomi, were expecting their first child.
But the Grimsby HGV driver, decided to use his handyman skills and fought back to form The Handyman.co.uk and now business is booming.

He said: "I drove car transporters and to put it bluntly, people simply stopped buying cars.

"But I had always been handy and thought I would set up as general handyman. Since then I have secured a number of care homes, letting agents, private landlords and property developers.

" Due to the workload and how the business has progressed I even have a team of sub-contractors who I call on to work for me, they consist of plastering, tiling, building, roofing, decorating and a gas safety engineer.

"And when I use sub-contractors they offer the same excellent customer service I am becoming known for."

And Mr Watts is not your average ‘jack of all trades’ odd-job man.

He has built his business with that professional touch – a corporate website and ‘feel’ which inspires confidence for both the big commercial contracts and the smaller odd-jobs and is even planning DIY courses for people wanting to get into the business.

It has not all been plain sailing though. A leaflet drop cost him money when his leaflets were unceremoniously dumped and never delivered and like many new businessmen, he has had to learn fast.

He said: "When I was first made redundant it was a scary time – that said, when Libby was born the sleepless nights didn’t bother me quite so much because I didn’t have to get up early!

"But now things are going better than expected and I am booked up four or five weeks in advance."

The key to Mr Watts’ success is due not only to his highly professional approach but also the wide range of services he offers.

These include, property maintenance, home improvements, plumbing, plastering, tiling, joinery, installation of appliances, flat pack assembly, socket replacement, bathroom installations, PAT testing and general maintenance.

New ventures include heating and gas servicing, PAT testing and a new discount card for the over-65’s.

The company is also a proud member of Checkatrade.com, which independently monitors its work on an ongoing basis.
