Compared to the review period, value sales are better off, mostly as the events over the review period were marked by a sharp decline in 2009 and 2010. Grocery strictly behaves in line with the dynamics in the general economy, as consumer purchasing power is dictated by now weakened disposable household incomes.

Competitive Landscape

Agrokor dd, the biggest Croatian company, was already the leader in grocery retailing with a 25% share of value sales, thanks to its Konzum and Tisak brands. By merging with Mercator, the lead is extended to 31% in 2014.

Industry Prospects

Despite all the fuss about consolidation, grocery retailers is not expected to see growth in sales: Over the forecast period, sales, at constant 2014 price, may even decline marginally. The reason for this is an overall pressure on prices to go down, either via trading down to private label, or via cheaper imports from EU countries.
