A SEA cadet team and a canoeing club are among the groups which have been awarded grants from the West Northamptonshire Corporationís (WNDC) Stronger Communities Fund.

A total of 11 groups from across the west of the county received grants from this fund, totalling £94,513.

The latest round of grants has seen money awarded to a host of groups, including Northampton and Wellingborough Sea Cadets, which was granted £7,000 to purchase canoeing and kayaking equipment to develop Paddlesport activities and Northampton Canoe and Kayak Club, which was awarded £10,000 to purchase and upgrade equipment to provide a wider range of boats and provide more coaching courses.

Northampton and Wellingborough Sea Cadets civilian instructor Chris Whittingham said:

"We wanted to develop Paddlesport activities within Northampton and Wellingborough Sea Cadet Corps and this grant will mean we can offer a whole range of Paddlesport activities."

"The skills gained by these individuals will add to their portfolio of water-based skills currently gained through sailing, power-boating and pulling. As a result their individual self-confidence will be enhanced and they will gain further skills that may be utilised in future employment roles."

Northampton Canoe and Kayak Club, Club Mark and Child Protection Officer Jim McCarthy said:

"Among other things, the grant will enable us to purchase and upgrade our equipment to provide a wider range of boats. This will offer local people as well as club members the chance to experience a range of different canoes and kayaks."

WNDC Chief Executive Peter Mawson commented:

"We are delighted to approve more WNDC funding for a wide range of community groups offering something special in their local area."

"These grants make a huge difference to the groups in question and to the local people for whom they provide much needed support and facilities."

Victoria Miles, Northamptonshire Community Foundation Chief Executive, said:
"These grants make a huge difference to local communities and capital funding in particular, such as equipment purchase and building renovation, is often difficult to secure."

"The latest round of grants illustrates how the Stronger Communities Fund is particularly valuable for the people in and around the Northampton, Daventry and Towcester areas."

The Stronger Communities Fund project was established in September 2008 with an allocation of £750, 000 capital funding over three years to support the increased engagement of community and voluntary groups in sports and culture across west Northamptonshire.
