Crealy’s seasonal recruitment drive for park staff and work experience has began and this year staff working on the attraction’s rides will be apply to complete a unique training course to achieve the newly developed NVQ in Mechanical Rides.

Staff at Crealy Great Adventure Park, near Exeter were amongst the first in the country to complete an NVQ in Mechanical Rides and the park plans to introduce this for all rides staff from this spring.

PRP Training of Pembrokeshire, South Wales designed the NVQ to roll out across visitor attractions and theme parks.

Until the NVQ was developed, ride operator training at Crealy was completed in-house from a combination of instructions and best practice provided by independent health and safety consultants and the Amusement Device Inspection Procedures Scheme.

Mandy Denton, Human Resources at Crealy said, "PRP Training approached us in January 2009 about producing a Mechanical Rides course for our Rangers. The course covers all aspects of mechanical ride responsibility, from opening and closing procedures to operational best practice.

"What made PRP’s NVO different is that it also includes areas such as customer service, health and safety, fire procedures and dealing with difficult situations, which previously were covered by individual training sessions."

PRP Training also include post training performance reviews and question sessions to evaluate the success of their training.

Rob Banks, Operations Manager said, "The NVQ is a great way to help our Rangers think a more about the job they do and really understand the importance of the role they play in the operation of the park as a whole. Our Guest Survey results since have shown a marked improvement which for Crealy is the biggest confirmation of success of all."

Currently 3 of Crealy’s Rangers have completed the NVQ with more registered for next year.

Mandy Denton continues, "We have a diverse skill set and age range amongst our Rangers at Crealy. Within our Rides department, we have staff ranging from 16 year old college students up to more senior people who have come out of retirement from other professions, therefore the experience is also diverse. The NVQ is suitable for all of these people. We recognize that staff are our most important asset at Crealy and therefore place considerable emphasis on development."
