One of the most notable new directions of the largest grocery retailers in Slovenia in 2012/2013 is opening small convenience stores in the city centres called "city format stores". They are located in the most frequently passed by locations and offer products suitable for urban consumers with time constraints, such as prepared sandwiches, coffee and fresh cut fruit. However, their number is still very small and the success of this type of store is the location, with footfall being crucial for maintaining the store's profitability amidst very high property rental prices in Slovenia. It is too soon to judge as these stores had been mainly operating for less than a year and are still waiting for the high summer season.
Competitive Landscape
Grocery retailers in Slovenia is dominated by the three biggest retail chains. Ranked first stands domestic retailer Poslovni Sistem Mercator, which witnessed a significant decrease in its share during the review period, mainly on account of its uncompetitive prices amongst discounters. With a new strategy and consumer focused approach, Mercator managed to reduce the pace of its falling value share, which decreased only marginally to account for 34% in 2013. Ranked second was Internationale Spar Centrale with 16% value share, which operates with the biggest consumer loyalty scheme in the country. 14% value share was held by another domestic retailer Engrotus, which coped with the high indebtedness and falling sales.

Industry Prospects
Changes witnessed in grocery retailers in 2013 in terms of opening the new format of convenience stores in the city centres, so called "city format stores", designed for the time-constrained urban population, are likely to last and see an increase in the number of outlets. However, the problem, that could impede development of this format, remains high rental prices in Slovenia which are likely to make these stores unprofitable if footfall is not sufficient. Furthermore, new concepts of the stores will go in the direction of more energy efficient and environment-friendly stores. Companies are also expected to keep strong focus on consumer loyalty programmes as it is much cheaper to retain a consumer than to find a new one.
