As of 1 April 2013, the federal government eliminated all tariffs on baby clothes to reduce the gap in retail prices that Canadians pay compared to US consumers. This tax break will encourage Canadian consumers to shop nationally.

Competitive Landscape

The US retailer The Children's Place remained the leading player in 2013, and registered retail value growth of 7% in current terms to reach sales of C$235million. The retailer focused on increasing its store count to squeeze out the competition in a tight category. The company opened six stores to make up for weak comparative sales results. In addition, The Children's Place implemented its new website platform throughout 2013, to add range to its distribution strategy. The retailer's e-commerce also saw increases in sales. in 2013. Furthermore, in 2013, the retailer brought out a new collection for boys, which included chino trousers for C$21, faux layered athletic rugby shirts for C$23 and polos for C$13.

Industry Prospects

Childrenswear is expected to see only moderate growth in the coming years. Canadian birth rates are expected to remain low and with immigration generally only affecting older demographic segments, childrenswear is expected to register a CAGR of 1% at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period to reach C$3.4 billion, while volume of sales will remain largely flat. While fashion trends and sports apparel are expected to have some positive effect on value sales, the continuing strength of cross-border shopping and bargain shopping (as childrenswear is subject to quick wear and tear) will be impacting demand unfavourably.
