The biggest hindrance to growth in refrigeration appliances in 2014 was a general decline in households’ purchasing power, resulting from earlier tax increases and rising unemployment. Frequent price-related incentives offered by various players did not manage to counter the volume decline; a paradox which can be explained by highly thrifty households which preferred to wait for further price declines before buying, as the price index in France remains on a strong deflationary trend. The high penetration rate of fridge-freezers and a growing resort to repair-rather-than-replace also negatively impacted demand. Besides, the generally low level of innovation in the category also failed to attract interest from consumers.
Competitive Landscape
Brandt France, the new French-based entity following the takeover of FagorBrandt by Groupe Cevital, managed to stabilise its sales at 12% of volume sales in 2014, and led refrigeration appliances. However, it should be noted that the appliances arm of the Thomson brand, which was still being managed and distributed by Brandt France in 2014, belongs to Technicolor. When excluding sales of refrigeration appliances under the Thomson brand, Brandt France only captured a 10% share of volume sales (from the Vedette, Fagor and Brandt brands) and fell back to fourth position in terms of volume share. Thus, when excluding volume sales under the brand Thomson, Indesit Co France and BSH France were the two leading companies, each accounting for a 12% share of volume sales.

Industry Prospects
In consideration of the high penetration rate of refrigeration appliances in France, and with growing awareness of and resort to repair-rather-than-replacement, sales of refrigeration appliances in France are set to decline, with a negligible negative retail volume CAGR over the next five years. A recovery in the housing market will undoubtedly recover demand for built-in products; however, the volume contribution will not be significant enough to offset the maturity of the core fridge-freezers category. Potentially better socioeconomic conditions over the forecast period may also reduce replacement plans which favour bigger refrigeration appliances, as the decline in the cocooning and home cooking trends are likely to reduce the need for bigger refrigeration capacity.
