In pet products, 2014 could be a better year than 2013 thanks to just one product - flea/tick treatments. Indeed, the bulk of sales in pet products are driven by rather regular and foreseeable trends, including the on-going rise in the cat population, which fuels sales of cat litter, or the results of the declining dog, bird and fish populations on volume sales of other pet products. One of the only elements of unpredictability is the impact of the weather on sales of pet healthcare, and particularly flea/ticks. Flea/tick treatments enjoyed a promising start to 2014. Sales of such products always depend on the vagaries of the weather and its impact on the reproduction of insects. Given the over-average warm temperatures in winter 2014, eggs and larvae appeared and contaminated dogs and cats sooner than usual, which is a good omen for sales in 2014.

Competitive Landscape

The competitive landscape in pet products should not change drastically in 2014. The most important events could be other mergers and acquisitions amongst local manufacturers, such as the acquisition of Francodex by Zolux in 2012, although nothing has been forecast for the moment.

Industry Prospects

Pet products could bear the brunt of the weakness in the French economy, and new signs of stagnation in local purchasing power in the short term. French consumers should still be ready to pay a premium in dog and mainly cat food despite the persisting recession, but could become more cautious and selective when it comes to less crucial products, such as pet dietary supplements and other pet products. Whilst pet owners do not tighten their belts when it comes to dog and cat food, even during gloomy economic scenarios, they can be more price-sensitive than usual in pet care products, and avoid unnecessary items. As a result, in a move away from 2011-2012, when all categories posted appreciable growth, pet care should see only two categories with significant positive value growth over the forecast period 2014-2019 at constant 2014 prices - cat litter and other pet products.
