[UKPRwire, Wed Dec 09 2009] Models Direct always approves when high fashion designers dare to be different with their choice of models. Sick of seeing nothing but young people on the catwalks? Meet Daphne Selfe, who at age 80 is still continuing her modelling career.
Daphne has been modelling for almost sixty years, after she was scouted in 1950 when working in a John Lewis fashion department. She was persuaded to enter a modelling competition, which she went on to win.
Daphne claims that it’s her long, and defiantly grey, hair that has directly influenced her continuing success in the modelling industry. “It made me more striking,” Daphne has said. “My hair is my fortune. My comeback was extraordinary and quite ironic. I got big when I embraced my age and went grey.” Of course, her strong cheekbones, good posture and the fact her body measurements have hardly changed help too!
The mature model took a break from her career but started modelling again eleven years ago when her husband passed away. She went on to feature in campaigns for Gap and Nivea, walked the runway for designers including Dolce and Gabbana, as well as featuring in Vogue and Marie Claire. Not only that, she appeared in TV show Absolutely Fabulous and in pop star Will Young’s music video for ‘Light My Fire’.
Daphne is concerned about the lifestyle and image that young models maintain. “So many are terribly thin, and shaped so differently to me,” she said. “Some girls are naturally slim, like Lily Cole, but others take it too far and just look ill and gaunt.” However, she realises what the fashion industry demands of its models. “There should be a far wider spread of body shapes but at the end of the day, the clothes must look good too. It’s tricky.”
Daphne still loves modelling, especially having her hair and make up done and she is keen to carry on for as long as there is still work out there for her. At least she is in a league of her own when it comes to modelling! “Other younger models admire me but they’re not jealous as I’m not a threat. I have a niche all of my own.”
