Diemar/Noble Photography presents 'Incandescence' - Photographs by Maeve Berry
In July, London's newest photography gallery presents a challenging and unique series by Maeve Berry. Exhibition dates: 30th July – 5th September 2009. See www.diemarnoble.com for more information.
[UKPRwire, Wed Jul 22 2009] The portrayal of death was once common in the family photographs of the late 19th and early 20th century, yet today the “final” photograph is generally no longer deemed acceptable or tasteful. Opening at Diemar/Noble Photography, Irish photographer Maeve Berry’s beautiful and haunting exhibition Incandescence addresses this lost photographic subject in a series capturing the closing moments of the human body in material form, revealing a last burst of transcendent beauty in a moment many fear most.
The project, shot within a cremator over a two-month period in 2008, arose from Berry’s interest in confronting the taboos surrounding death imagery in our modern society. Berrys photographs are not meant to cause the viewer unease but to attempt this visual exploration in an aesthetically pleasing format.
By presenting death as an art form, the viewer is given a dual perception; one on a purely aesthetic level, the other on a secondary, perhaps more profound, intellectual or demystifying level. By bravely embarking on this series, Berry fills a void that exists in the modern art gallery; these representations of what happens physically after one dies are given a place in the art world amongst other images in progression of life.
The work will also be featured in the forthcoming exhibition DARK SIDE 2 –
Photographic Power and Violence, Disease and Death Photographed, opening in September 2009 at Fotomuseum Winterthur in Switzerland.
