Illicitus Productions, a film production company aimed at nurturing a socially conscious cinema, will premiere its short film "Anathema" as part of the Short Film Corner at the Festival De Cannes, taking place from the 15th to the 26th of May 2013.

Anathema tells the story of a cocaine addict who believes that he has arranged a casual hook-up only to realise that things are not as they seem when the stranger arrives. Speaking about the film, the founder and creative director of Illicitus Productions, Asim Abbasi, stated: "with strong biblical symbolism, this film attempts to raise a number of rather large questions about religion, sexuality and mortality. The experimental narrative jumps between reality and illusion, half-truths and forgotten incidents, disavowing the belief that memory is a factual recollection, viewing it as fundamentally chaotic and delusional."

"Anathema" is the first in the trilogy of short films, all dealing with similar themes of memory and reality, that Illicitus Productions has just completed work on. "Whore" which deals with paranoia in marital relations and "Once A Man" which addresses nostalgia in old age, are both expected to be released through the festival circuits in the latter half of 2013.

The Company is now developing its debut feature film which is expected to go into production at the end of the year. Set in East London, the film would be a tale of self-discovery with a strong undercurrent of thriller, focused on the relationship between a Pakistani immigrant girl and a prostitute.
