Models Direct's Festival Fashion for Summer 2010

Inspired by last month’s Coachella music festival in California, Models Direct brings you some of the trends for the upcoming festival season. While following these trends will make you look the part, you may want to adapt them to suit the British weather!

The festival was attended by plenty of celebrities, including Anne Hathaway, Dita Von Teese and Katy Perry, as well as British ‘it-girls’ and models Alexa Chung, Pixie Gelfof and Agyness Deyn with her designer friend Henry Holland. Performers at the festival included Florence and the Machine, Beyoncé and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, who were also sporting some of the latest fashion trends.

So, what does Models Direct suggest?

Espadrilles. Along with clogs, this is a rather unexpected shoe trend for summer 2010, described wonderfully as "the shoes your art teacher used to wear in the summer term… the wedge sandal’s slightly square older sister" by Jess Cartner-Morley in the Guardian. Great for festivals with guaranteed sun, but wellies will no doubt be more suitable for the British festivals.

Florals. Models Direct can’t help but notice the popularity of floral prints at the moment, especially on teenagers and twenty-somethings. When choosing your ‘student’ floral print go for a grungy look with smudged patterns. As Cartner-Morley says, "if you can identify the type of floral it’s not a student floral. Wear with biker/boxing boots, a fringed cross-body bag and round sunglasses for the full young Courtney Love look." For musical evenings in Britain, you might also want to add a warm pair of leggings and a coat!

Circular sunglasses. As seen on numerous celebrities including Lady Gaga, Chloe Sevigny and Victoria, retro circle shades are definitely the hottest sunglasses to have this summer. Let’s just hope we have enough sun to warrant wearing them!

Short shorts. Even if you have to pair them with tights, wellies and a rain mac, shorts are great for festivals. If you’re expecting mud of Glastonbury proportions, trousers aren’t much use, you’ll end up with it caked to the bottom of them. What’s more, trousers (particularly jeans) soak up the moisture and take forever to dry. Shorts are much more practical. This year, along with summer skirts, the hemlines are as high as possible, which could well make you feel pretty self-conscious. Models Direct recommend finding a pair that you feel comfortable in or cutting up an old pair of jeans to get the length you want.
